“We had joy, we had fun, we saw bisons in the sun” — with artistic liberties with one of my favorite songs “Seasons in the Sun.” I always enjoy seeing the bison herd at Model, TN in Land Between the Lakes. I never fail to spot them in their domain because I am always fearful that either they will ‘run away’ or someone with the feds may try to ‘disappear them.’ Disappear them, you may ask? Yes, in 1996 TVA at the time controlled LBL and the feds did indeed have a plan to do away with the Model, TN bison herd. A groupof citizens who named themselves “Bison-TENN ial” in honor of the Tennessee Bison Herd and the state’s bicentennial year, took on the federal government and, in my opinion, was the primary reason the bison herd was not moved. The feds said they did not have enough money to maintain the fence … really? Yeah, really, that was one of their arguments for wanting to move the herd.
