The violent and quick Battle of Fort Henry in the Stewart County portion of Land Between the Lakes was one of the first and one of the most underrated battles, from a strategic point of view, of any of the battles of the American Civil War. The Battle of Fort Henry and the subsequent Battle of Fort Donelson opened the heart of the Confederacy to the Union and the Confederacy never recovered from the losses or again gained the advantage, especially in the Western Theatre, many military historians agree. Read for yourself the historic account on the historic marker at the entrance of the road to Boswell Landing and the site of Fort Henry, Tennessee.
