‘Twas a bad day for the Scarecrow. A very bad day. Mostly days are and were pretty good for the scarecrow; but not this day. Not by a good bit. This was a bad day for the Scarecrow! Most days are good days for Scarecrows in Land Between the Lakes; but not this one (see photo.)
Compared to some days a bad day is a good day, and so it goes; but I digress.
The scarecrow got up with a splitting headache — literally. Head split and hay fever happening, all out in the open. Then a crow mocked him. Then another and another and relentless they were in the mocking, they were. A ‘murder’ of crows is what you call a bunch of crows and that’s what they tried to do to the scarecrow. And they mocked him so hard he started thinking with that splitting head . He got the idea to start running.
It soon became apparent this was not a good day for the scarecrow and twas indeed a bad day.
And before you know it he had lost track of time and while trying to run backwards to catch the time he’d lost and — wham — ran right into a hay rake.
Once caught up in the hay rake he figured he may as well stay there all day. It was a bad day, he thought. But it could be worse.
And since it can always get worse — why try? Stay right where you are, said the Scarecrow to himself. And since his head was split his thoughts and words all came spilling out together for the crows to feed on. And he decided to stay right were he was on the hay rake because why not? If things can get get worse and probably will, then why try to make things better?
Just stay right there on the hay rake and hope for the best, thought the Scarecrow, out loud. Why try? Why try at all? If things won’t get better, I might make it better by not trying and then that might not make things get worse and that should make this bad day get better.
And that scared the crows.
Because he was right.
