End of the World

End of the World ~ LBL area

Palmyra’s Railroad Tunnel is fabled to be at ‘The End of the World,’ according to local lore. In Montgomery County, Tennessee the historic town of Palmyra holds many stories and mysteries. The Palmyra Railroad Tunnel in this portion of the Land Between the Lakes area is in one of the most historic, yet now unfamiliar and seldom explored towns in our locale.

The End of the World moniker comes to Palmyra because, as the old timers say, “The Palmyra road runs into the water where a river ferry worked in the once prosperous township. The telephone lines span off a steep river bluff into the air and the railroad runs right into the ground.”

Mysterious and historic are words used to describe many towns and communities in the Land Between the Lakes area. Palmyra is one of those towns that deserve the titles.

Palmyra saw lots of action in the civil war as a staging point for both Confederate and Union forces. This was in part a result of the proximity of the main railroad artery that ran and continues to run through the town.

Montgomery County is the neighbor to the east of Stewart County, Tennessee. Stewart County holds all of the Tennessee portion of the federal government’s Land Between the Lakes National Recreation area. One third of LBL is in Tennessee and all of that is in Stewart County.

Two thirds of LBL is in Kentucky. Montgomery County is one of the most populous of all the LBL area counties.

Palmyra is one of the unincorporated towns in historic Montgomery County.

The railroad tunnel pictured here was built pre-civil war and continues to function to this day as a conduit for rail travel.

End of the World ~ Palmyra

It is the end or

the beginning of

the world here in

Palmyra, depending

on which way you may be

coming or going….

going it is the beginning

coming it is the end

or could it be the other way?

And that depends upon

which start you make

and what end you take.
