What caused this LBL Bison scar?

When you visit the American Bison range in the Model, Tennessee portion of Land Between the Lakes as often as I do, you begin to recognize the animals. This one is Bison scar. The reason the name is Bison scar is obvious. Somehow or another, this animal got a pretty large gash on it in same manner. I wonder what caused this bison scar?

It makes you wonder if this animal and another bison got just a little bit too playful in their romps on the bison range.

Perhaps the animal rubbed too hard on a tree or post.

When you do visit the bison at this time of the hot dry summer, you can see the very dusty roll pit they have dug out during the years and decades. The large roll pit is on the back side of the extended portion of the bison range.

Each one of the animals is unique. I cannot say I can tell them all apart, but this one was fairly easy to pick out of the herd.

With this kind of Bison scar, it makes you wonder how this happened. Is this a routine wound or one of the more serious ones.

The injury seems to have healed just fine. I am no expert on the condition of these animals, but they do intrigue me with their habits and behaviors.

When it comes to shooting pictures of these animals, I find them unusually difficult to photograph. I never seem to be very pleased with the shots that I get of the bison herd in the Model, Tennessee portion of Land Between the Lakes.

That does not keep me from shooting them though. I hope you enjoy these photos and if you have an photo tips to share — especially in shooting large animals like these bison — please place your information in the comment box.
